2021 Toyota Prius – The Toyota Prius is still one of the most popular hybrids at the moment, but sales are declining. Last month, Toyota sold 16,857 Prius models, down 43.2 percent from 29,655 that it sold in the same month last year.

To try and expand its appeal, Toyota has announced the Prius Prime 2021, which will arrive at the dealership this summer with several welcome updates.

The Prius Prime 2021 features the same hybrid powertrain plug-in as before, consisting of a 1.8-liter four-cylinder, electric motor and 8.8 kWh lithium-ion battery.

This allows the Prius Prime to produce a combined output of 121 hp. That’s not much power, but the Prius Prime is still very efficient with a city fuel economy rating of 55 mpg / 53 mpg highway / 54 mpg combined. It also has an electric range of up to 25 miles.

The lower trim level is powered by four smaller 1.8-liter pots and is rated 29/39/33 manually and 30/38/33 mpg with optional CVT. Moving up the ladder for a stronger 2.0 liter with 169 hp produces 31/38/34 for XSE and 31/40/34 trims for other trims.

If you are on the market for a non-hybrid economy car with a high fuel economy score, the new Corolla 2020 and its new inline-four 2.0 liter may be the right way. But the new Corolla Hybrid is very impressive.

Not only did it almost match the Prius, but it really beat Kia Niro, matching the Honda Insight, and only a few traces of Hyundai Ioniq.

The biggest change is the addition of a new backseat available that allows the model to sit up to five people. This replaces the two captain seats in the previous model which are separated by armrests and cupholders.

Black interior accents also replace the previous white accents for “more premium shades.” Other new cabin features include a new sun visor extender and a seat heating switch for front seat passengers to make it easier to use.

Toyota has also improved the Prius Prime technology. Fortunately, Apple CarPlay is now offered as a standard along with Amazon Alexa support and SiriusXM satellite radio.

In addition, Toyota also changed the name of the Trim Plus, Premium, and Advanced levels to LE, XLE, and Limited to match other models in the ranks of car manufacturers.
